Another day with highs below 90 feels like a win this summer, even with scattered showers and storms around as soon as lunchtime. A weak cold front driving through the area will keep a chance of scattered storms going into the evening. Hit or miss, but some spots could pick up a quick dousing and perhaps some isolated wind damage. Sunshine should make a comeback Friday as rain chances dwindle beyond Thursday night.

Through tonight: You know the drill. Showers and storms are possible through a bit beyond sunset. Any storm could briefly bring heavy rain, dangerous lightning and perhaps isolated strong wind gusts. It should clear overnight — maybe a quick shower through midnight or so — as humidity begins to fall off. Lows will probably end up in the mid-60s to low 70s.

Tomorrow (Friday): Rain odds will fall to near zero, and skies are expected to turn mainly sunny. High temperatures should reach the mid- and upper 80s in most spots. Winds should blow from the northeast around 5 mph.

More rain, for some: Even sitting in dry Northwest Washington, it’s hard not to appreciate the rate at which rain fell over the official location for weather records at Reagan National Airport — 1.28 inches fell in about 25 minutes, with the first 0.01 inches tallied at 12:25 p.m. and 1.28 inches in the bucket by 12:50 p.m. Before this week, we have to go back to April 3 to find a day with 1 inch or more of rain for Washington. It has now happened twice since Monday. We could use more as drought continues to grip the region.
