After Kurt Angle said Monday on Ariel Helwani’s MMA podcast that the one UFC fight Brock Lesnar would come back for is with Jon Jones, Jones stirred the pot on social media.
“He knows that’s what his friends want to hear, but he doesn’t really want this fight. Trust me,” Jones said about Lesnar on Instagram, before dropping the dagger on Twitter.
“Brock is way too slow, I’ll embarrass him.”
UFC president Dana White said earlier this year that Lesnar, still a star with WWE, is done with mixed martial arts. But perhaps the 42-year-old can be lured back with what surely would be a big-money fight.
“I hope he does return,” Angle told Helwani. “I know that he’s said he’s retired, but I think the one fight he wants — and I don’t know if it’s ever gonna happen — but he wants to go up against Jones, Jon Jones. I think that would be an extraordinary fight. They’re very different. Their sizes are extremely the opposite, but Brock’s a freak. He might not win all his fights, he might not be the most polished fighter, but he is an incredible athlete.”
Lesnar last fought at UFC 200 three years ago — nearly five years after his previous fight — defeating Mark Hunt by unanimous decision. That decision was turned into a no-contest after Lesnar tested positive for clomiphene, an anti-estrogen drug.
The former NCAA Division I wrestling champion and failed NFL prospect was a quick riser in MMA after his initial WWE run. In just his fourth fight on Nov. 15, 2008, he defeated UFC legend Randy Couture by TKO in the second round to win the UFC heavyweight championship.
Lesnar then avenged his loss to Frank Mir on July 11, 2009 by defeating him via TKO to unify the UFC heavyweight titles; Couture had been gone for a year, prompting the creation of an interim heavyweight title.
Jones, 32, is one of UFC’s biggest stars despite some issues outside of the octagon. He’s currently the light heavyweight champion and has a 25-1 (1) record. His knockout victory over Daniel Cormier at UFC 214 was changed to a no-contest after Jones tested positive for the banned steroid turinabol. His only loss came in 2009.
